At a time when division and hate are on the rise again, “My Friend Sam” is a timely and poignant reminder of the dangers of prejudice and how quickly a new era of dehumanization can arrive and take hold. More than a warning from the past or an echo of the present, it is a cinematic journey into how music, kindness, and friendship can help the human spirit survive and even heal from the darkest of times.
Over the past two decades, Regina Spektor has become a beloved name in the music industry, celebrated for her evocative sound, lyrical prowess, and overall artistry. But little known is the story of the two remarkable individuals who gifted Regina the musical education that allowed her to become a world-touring musician. “My Friend Sam” tells the story of Regina’s friendship with violinist and Holocaust survivor Samuel Marder. By delicately weaving together original footage, recordings of our interviewees’ music, and rich archival materials, this film will be a poignant tapestry of friendship, art, and resilience.
